With the 11th Parliament set to dissolve on April 24, 2026, lawmakers are raising concerns over a looming legislative backlog.
MPs Asuman Basalirwa, Richard Lumu, and Joseph Ssewungu have called on Speaker Anita Among to prioritize critical business, warning that time is running out.
“We need to categorize pending business and tackle the urgent ones first,” Basalirwa said.
Lumu added that with fewer MPs attending, “little time will be taken to process these bills,” advocating for efficient and regular House sittings.
The trio is pressing for Parliament to convene consistently to clear key legislation, including bills with constitutional and non-constitutional deadlines. Some of the pending bills include the National Legal Aid Bill 2022, the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill 2023, and the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2024.
Speaker Anita Among has also emphasized the urgency of handling pending business before Parliament adjourns to allow MPs to participate in campaign activities.
“There is need to urgently handle the pending business in the House before Parliament can break off to allow MPs participate in the campaigns,” she said.
